Canadian Association of Railway Modellers - Toronto Chapter
2004/09/20 Meeting
at Etobicoke Central Railway, 284 Mill Road #f10, Etobicoke
Notes taken by Ian McIntosh, CARM-TC Secretary
They try to encourage kids, but things get dropped and knocked over, so they want some equipment that will survive a drop.
He had some locos made in Hong Kong for Life-Like, and wanted to make them work better. First he cut off the couplers on the trucks. He pulled the horn hook couplers out of the front and replaced with KD #5s (file the hole larger) using a #2 screw.
He also drilled a hole for wiring at the back of the floor and brought up two wires and soldered them to the motor wires. Locos are all different inside. He put connectors on the other ends of the wires - electrical connectors from the radio control field so they hold together well.
He put the bodies back on, fuel tanks if need be. Now the loco pair has 8 wheel pickup and 8 wheel drive, so it handles gaps and dirt better than with 4. It also alleviates having 2 locos with the same number.
It's cheap, and only a couple of hours. You can let kids run them without worrying. You can let youngsters that you normally wouldn't run them.
Discussion:
CH: Should they sign a waiver before you let them use your expensive equipment?
JH: No, just don't let them use the good stuff until they're ready.
