For many years the Fiat 126 was the most popular car bought in Poland. That however, changed in 1998 when this car slowly started to take further places in automotive sales statistics. The Fiat 126 is still the least expensive vehicle in the market and for many people it is the only possibility to own a new car. The maintenence costs are quite inexpensive because of inexpensive replacement parts and service.

In 1972 Fiat started production of the rear-engined 126 (like it's predecessors 500, 600 and 850).. Now, 25 years later we can still purchase a brand new 126 in Poland. This small car can be found on every road in Poland. In Western Europe the last Fiat 126 was sold in the year 1982, but it is still produced in Poland. There were many other 126 or Maluch meaning small baby in Polish including a 3 door 700 BIS, 600, 650, e.l, elx, erx, and finally Town and Town SX. In the Autumn of 1987 the 126 BIS was officially introduced. Production of the BIS continued until 1991 with the introduction of the Cinquecento. Since 1972 3,318,674 Fiat 126's have been produced in the Polish factories of Tychy and Bielsko-Biala.

In 1994 the 126 was modernized. The body was slightly redisigned, the interior was much improved and the car had halogen lights installed. After 1994 the Fiat 126p was called the Fiat 126 e.l or elx. As mentioned before the car is now called Town and Town SX. In the first 6 months of the year 1999 about 16,000 Fiat 126 found new owners in Poland. The number was significantly higher a few years ago. Production of the 126 came to and end in September of 2000, with a special series of 1000 Fiat 126's, called "Happy End". 126's were exported to Italy, Yugoslavia, Germany, Hungary, France, China, Great Britain, Czechoslovakia, Cuba, Belgium, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Greecce, Austria, Holland, Denmark, Cyprus, Chile, New Zealand, and Australia.
