["In 1944 the Montreal Locomotive Works delivered 20 4-8-2's to
the Canadian National Rys. The locos, numbered 6060 to 6079,
had as much streamstyling as wartime metals conservation would
allow: deep-skirted front steps and walkway, rounded domes and
typically Canadian rounded-off vestibule cabs, and a conical
bullet-shaped smokebox front from which they got their nickname,
Bullet-Nose Betties. Designated class U-1f, they were designed
for and are still doing fast passenger service. A model of this
loco would be pretty much a scratch-building job. Drivers,
enginbe and trailing trucks, air pump, generator, valve
mechanism and pilot are available commercially. The frame and
superstructure would have to be built. In HO, a Varney Northern
frame would be just about right.
The CN Class U-1f Mountain is equipped with this Vanderbilt-type
coal tender. Its short, stubby dimensions are somewhat
different from most American tenders and, therefore, unlike any
Vanderbilt tender kits. However, it could be built using a wood
base and a shim metal or card stock rivet overlay. Trucks and
incidental hardware are available commercially. The loco is
painted as follows: Superstructure, chassis and backhead are
black; cab, running board skirts and cab interior are green;
lettering and striping are gold; and the numbers on the running
board skirts are natural brass. The tender is black with gold
lettering outlined in black on a red background."]

6060
Bullet-Nosed Express
In 1944, in response to the evergrowing wartime need for more
efficient rail transportation, Canadian National launched its
new, lighter, faster and more versatile version of the 4-8-2
steam locomotive, the 6060 series U1-F class. Equipped with its
characteristic side valences painted in green, gold and black
and distinguishable by the bullet nose of its smoke box front,
the 6060 became affectionately known as the "Bullet-Nosed
Betty".
Although primarily designed for passenger service, the
skillfully balanced 6060 was not only capable of reaching speeds
of 75 miles per hour but it did so ithout sacrificing its
workhorse ability to haul long freight trains, a task which it
frequently had to carry out. Over time, however, the 6060
became known as a premier passenger locomotive as it took over
the more prestigious runs the "Continental Limited" (running
between Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver) and the "International
Limited" (running between Montreal, Toronto and Chicago).
As steam locomotives were being replaced by the new generation
of diesels, the "Bullet-Nosed Betty" was retired after 16 years
of dependable service. For most steam locomotives, the advent
of the diesel marked the end of the line. But not for the 6060!
Although retired from active duty and put on display in Jasper,
Alberta in 1962, the "Bullet-Nosed Betty" was yet again called
upon to serve in 1972, this time for steam aficionado
excursions. In 1980, CN retired the 6060 and offered the
locomotive as a gift to the people of Alberta to commemorate
their province's 75th anniversary. After a second shortlived
retirement, the 6060, known from then on as the
"Spirit of Alberta", was once more restored to full operating
condition. To this day, this timeless locomotive lives on,
bridging the gap between the past and the present.
We are proud to commemorate such a phenomonal part of Canadian
rail history with our limited collector's edition
